Champions League Last 16: Chelsea ease past Atletico Madrid, holders Bayern Munich also through

CHELSEA VS ALETICO MADRID

Chelsea made it three out of three for English sides in the quarter finals of the Champions League as they eased to a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

Three of Chelsea’s summer signings combined for the first goal as Hakim Ziyech finished off a brilliant break away move started by Kai Havertz and set up neatly by Timo Werner.

Substitute Emerson scored with his first touch in added time to put the nail in the coffin and record a 3-0 aggregate win against a lacklustre Atletico side.

It is the first time in seven years that Chelsea have made it past the last 16 stage and manager Thomas Tuchel believes that his side well and truly deserved to be triumphant.

“The most important thing is that we feel we deserve this”, he said. “It’s most important you feel it and that no one has to convince you – you need to feel it.”

Chelsea join 2018/19 champions Liverpool and Manchester City in the quarter finals.

BAYERN MUNICH VS LAZIO

Reigning champions Bayern Munich also advanced into the last eight with a 2-1 win over Lazio at the Allianz Arena.

Robert Lewandowski scored his 37th goal of the season for Bayern with a tidily tucked away penalty before former Stoke City and Paris St-Germain striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting netted the second.

Marco Parolo scored a late consolation goal for the Italians but the German champions ran away comfortable 6-2 winners over both legs.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick said that the victory for his side was “well deserved” but he was disappointed to have conceded a goal.

He said: “It was important for me that we won the game. Lazio defended well but I think the win was deserved. It’s a shame that we conceded again.”

The last eight consist of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, PSG, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Porto.

The draw for the last eight will take place on Friday.
