One of Swindon Town WFC’s most important players is captain and goal-machine Annie Colston who has an impressive eight goals in nine starts to begin Swindon’s 24/25 campaign.
Colston was taken aback by the 2-0 loss against QPR that ended Town’s eight game unbeaten run in all competitions.
“As much as we wanted to be unbeaten, it sort of humbles you a bit, just shows you if you’re not on the top of your game, then you will get beaten and it’s not a nice feeling”, were the forwards thoughts on the end of Town’s invincible streak.
Facing a team in the opposite league conference to them made it incredibly hard for Town to predict how the game would go:
“It was a tough game today, we realised QPR are one of the oppositions we don’t face in our league, they were keeping the ball well and sitting in a low-block so it was very hard to break them down.
“We attacked with intent today, we tried to go forwards, play positive, but things just didn’t go our way.”

The tie was Town’s third game in seven days meaning fatigue was nibbling at many players, which the R’s capitalised on by leaning heavily into the physical aspects of their own play:
“We didn’t anticipate how physical it was going to be, we have to win the first and second balls, and be alive at all times, respond to them, be more proactive, we were just getting caught out today by being complacent at times.”
Colston didn’t start the game due to picking up a nasty knock after the final whistle in Town’s 4-3 win against Abingdon three days prior. She was brought on as part of a triple change in the 68th minute, which gave some more intensity to Town’s play:
“When I came on the pitch it was really positive to go forwards and see a bit more of the link-up play, which didn’t really happen enough at times in the game, I thought I did well when I came on, hit the post, got close but not close enough”, were Colston’s thoughts on her own contributions.

Although Town are now out of the cup, they sit top of their league with seven wins from seven after an impressive start and can focus intently on maintaining that form as they face Bristol Rovers up next:
“It’s so key now to focus on the league, obviously cup fixtures are great but we’ve had a three game week, so everyone’s feeling a bit leggy getting to the end of the three games, work on our performance and take it from here.”
