“She Was The Foundation Of Our Clean Sheet”-Oxford United Women’s Manager Sam Rose Reacts To His Side’s 1-0 Win In The Adobe Women’s FA Cup

Oxford United Women beat Watford Women one nil thanks to a 70th minute Vitallia Budaieva finish in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup second round.

The U’s had been winless in their last two games coming into this FA Cup tie, Rose adressed the importance of coming away with a win.

“I’m really pleased with a win, I think we really needed a win off the back of the last two games, whether it came in the league or the cup, it was important that we put on a performance today which I thought until we went down to ten players we did really well, we pressed really well and it looked a lot more like us”.

“There were some great passages of play for both teams, but we might have rode our luck at times”.

A 78th minute hand ball off the line from U’s defender Nicola Gibson saw the Yellows down to ten players with a penalty kick against them. Coral-Jade Haines’ spot kick was saved by U’s goalkeeper Paris Sercombe.

“We obviously had Paris in goal who saved the penalty, she’s done really well today, Beth (Howard) has been injured and Paris came straight in. To play like that, she was the foundation of our clean sheet, so we’re over the moon with her, but right the way through the team. It was really encouraging and for those players who didn’t start for them to get minutes as well is important.”

The Yellows will play a friendly at their training ground against Swindon Town Women next Sunday.

“Nothing in the league or cup next weekend so we’ve got a game in the diary to keep our players ticking over.”

Since speaking with Rose the Yellows have drawn National League Division One outfit Bristol Rovers at home in the third round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. https://www.thefa.com/news/2024/nov/25/adobe-womens-fa-cup-third-round-draw-details-20242211

“We look forward to the third round, we will see what happens, hopefully we get a nicer draw than a strong team like Watford, there’s still a nice mix in the hat so we hope that’s kind to us and we’ll take it as it comes”

The U’s next game wouldn’t have been until the 15th December if it wasn’t for today’s FA Cup win.

“We’ll look to the third round and then we have Plymouth at home and then that’ll be us for the Christmas break”

“If you’d heard the dressing room after today’s win! We’re over the moon, to get a win today was important.”
