Forest Green Rovers first half double keeps them in the promotion hunt after narrow victory against Sutton United

Forest Green won for just the second time in seven matches when they defeated Sutton United at the New Lane on Tuesday night.

Rovers were dominant in the first half and two goals in seven first half minutes set the Greens on their way to move level with York City in second place in the National League albeit having played a game more.

Charlie McCann gave the hosts the lead in the 29th minute after a slaloming run before perfectly placing a strike in the bottom corner past Jack Sims in the U’s goal.

FGR quickly doubled their lead after a Jamie Robson mis-hit strike hit the chest of joint top scorer Christian Doidge who showed a real poachers instinct to send the home side to their second successive home success.

The away side were pushing to get back into the game and in a sustained spell of dominance they got their rewards as William James Davies chested down a ball beyond the half way line and was awarded way too much space by the Greens which allowed him to unleash a powerful strike beyond the reach of Liverpool loanee Fabian Mrozek.

FGR held on however to claim a crucial victory that gets them back on the promotion trail, albeit they currently sit a whopping 11 points behind leaders Barnet in the table.

They are also 16 points clear of Altrincham in the playoff places as they gear up to secure an instant return to the Football League after suffering relegation last season.
