“We had a fantastic night” – Cheltenham Town striker Matty Taylor on superb win at promotion-chasing AFC Wimbledon before League Two clash at Swindon Town

Cheltenham Town striker Matty Taylor said Tuesday’s 2-1 victory away against automatic promotion-chasing AFC Wimbledon was “certainly up there” as one of the performances of the season.

The Robins earned one of the finest wins of their campaign with their performance at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, with Ashley Hay’s glancing header in the first half giving them the lead, before Wimbledon answered back through Marcus Browne.

However, Taylor’s superb finishing into the bottom corner sealed all three points for the Gloucestershire side, keeping their top-ten league push alive while The Dons had their promotion chase derailed.

“It was a brilliant performance tonight against a very, very good side,” started Taylor. “I think they [Wimbledon] will get promoted, to be fair, we’ll see whether they do or not, but when you’re playing against sides, you just kind of get a feel of their level.

“I thought they had threats all over the pitch, but we had a fantastic night. The boys at the back were obviously disappointed to let in the goal. A few individual errors, but that happens.

“But it was a really good performance, and it was nice to get the winner,” continued the striker, notching his fifth goal of the League Two campaign with that strike.

It was only the fourth time Cheltenham have taken three points away from the EV Charger Points stadium, boasting the tenth worst away record in League Two, while their home form is the fifth best in the league.

“It’s certainly up there, yes,”  Taylor thought when asked if it was their best result of the campaign.

“Obviously, given our away form, we know we need to be better at that and we’d be further up the table. So yes, it is right up there.”

“I can’t say it’s not for a lack of trying,” Taylor continued after he was asked about why the Robins’ away form has been an issue in 2024/25.

“We try and do that every week, but it just doesn’t happen for whatever reason, same as we’re really good at home, the other sides are going to be better at home.

“I just think we got our shape right, we went ahead of us, won our battles and I thought we were a bit better going forward.”

Cheltenham will have another tough away test this Saturday, travelling to their nearest rivals mile-wise in the league as they face Swindon Town.

The Wiltshire side have been rejuvenated under Ian Holloway after he came into the manager role in late October, taking them from 22nd and just above the relegation zone all the way up to 15th.

On what needs to be done to build on the fine win against Wimbledon, Taylor said: “We need to pick the right option, the right pass, when to shoot, when to cross. We know it needs to be tidier.

“I think we were just maybe a little bit better decision-making and obviously defended really well, but if it’s even tidier, we’ll score more goals,” concluded the striker.
