Gloucester City Kings finished their NBL Division 3 season with a last-minute win against Plymouth Marjon Patriots, Head Coach James Bowers says: “When we play that kind of freedom, good things can happen.”
“It’s been a journey for us this year and this team is really starting to bond and come together and it’s a great show of the work that these guys are putting in this year.
“That’s, that’s how our season has been, I think it’s very fitting,” Bowers said as he reflected on what the win means to the team.
“Especially for the guys who put so much work in this year and the fans to come out and put on a show. We said in the locker room before we came out, we are building and this is year one,” he continued.
“Mountains are pretty tall and we’re only at base camp right now.”
This is Bowers’ first season as head coach of the Men’s team but the Stroud-born coach has been at the club for two years previously as the coach of the Women’s team.
“Our record is not where we want it to be by any means, we’ve got a group there that wants to win. I want to win. I love winning. I’m not ashamed about it, I want to win games.
“It’s about taking each one as it comes, and we dropped some games this year that we probably shouldn’t have dropped and maybe it just wasn’t the right time for us but we’ll go into next year expecting to win every single time.”
The atmosphere at Leisure at Cheltenham was incredible, with a small crowd of around 50 people, the home side were without a doubt given an advantage by the supporters who were screaming and shouting for their team throughout the entire game.
When asked what he would say to someone from the area who hasn’t been to a Gloucester City King’s game before, the Head Coach said: “Just give it a go. Just try once, that’s all you need, one game and if it happens to be a game like that, you’re gonna be a fan for life.”
Whilst the King’s season may be over, the 24/25 NBL season will begin in September so make sure to stay tuned with the Gloucester City King’s social channels for any updates on their next fixtures.
