Are the Premier League’s big spenders getting value for their money?

Premier League clubs have set a new record over 2023 summer transfer window after collectively spending £2.36 million pounds on transfers.

The real question is, are the teams getting their money’s worth in the league?

The team with the largest net spends in the league over 2023 has been West London side, Chelsea

The club taken over by Todd Boehly led consortium has accumulated a staggering £424.8 million pounds spent in the calendar year.

The Blues have only totalled 48 points throughout the year. This puts them in 13th place overall and behind teams like Fulham, Brentford, and Wolves. This gives us an estimate of £8.85 million spent per point.

Despite Chelsea’s rise in revenue by 6.5% Boehly’s Blues took a net loss of £90 million, having now being troubled by the FFP rules they are obliged to sell players by June 30th according to Fabrizio Romano

Adding to this a Premier League giant Manchester United have also been in the spending limelight over the past couple of years.

The side ran by the Glazers spent £167.4 million over the 2023, a number which is significantly less than the London side although still an impressive amount.

Which proves us an estimate of £2.26 million per point which is much better than Boehly’s side.

By the statistics above this currently tells us that overall, the higher net spends do not achieve better results in the league table for the sides.

Although, managerial appointments and transfer decisions hugely decide how well a team does. These decisions are chosen by the owners such as Boehly or Glazers or the staff chosen by the owners.

The need for achievements and the pressure is a lot bigger for the ‘top six’ sides.

Let’s have a look to see whether the teams lower down the table are seeing the same results.

Nottingham Forest, who are currently fighting to stay up in the Premier League, have spent £104.5 million over 2023 and accumulating 45 points in total which is only 3 places behind Chelsea, but 16th out of all the Premier League clubs.

This proves a £2.32 million spent per point just £600,000 more than Manchester United per point. However, The Reds have been troubled by the FFP rules and could be facing a point deduction due to not achieving substantial revenue.

To remain in the Premier League requires sustainability and revenue over time. Spending a significant amount of money in singe transfer windows is a huge risk and proven to be an unlikely reward shown by statistics

Teams such as Everton, who have faced point deduction and Nottingham Forest and Chelsea who are closely analysed and could be facing a point deduction due to their huge amount of Net spent over Income.

Do you think large expenditure is wrong or the big spending clubs have been mis-managed?
