Fleetwood Town midfielder Matty Virtue reflects on 2-0 victory at Cheltenham: “We needed to stamp our authority on the game and show what we’re made of”

Fleetwood Town bounce back with three points at the EV Charger Points stadium after dropping a surprise two points to bottom of the league Morecambe last Monday night.

Former Liverpool academy midfielder Matty Virtue scored both goals for The Fisherman to take them up to 10th in the league on 12 points with a game in hand.

Virtue signed for Fleetwood in the summer from local rivals Blackpool and has seemed to settle in well:

He said: “The group is really good I’ve got a few lads I travel with every day so we’re really together and I’ve been really enjoying it and it’s a nice change from where I was at last season and looking forward to cracking on.”

“I’m happy with how I played personally and happy with how the team played, clean sheet, 2-0 win, can’t really ask for much more.”

Talking about his two quick goals in the first half and second half, Virtue stated:

“We talk about the first 15 minutes of each half, we needed to stamp our authority on the game and really show what we’re made of and I feel like we can take the game away from teams early on and that’s what we’ve shown.”

Fleetwood were backed as one of the favourites to get automatic promotion or play-off spots at the start of the season, with one loss in seven games it’s looking likely they’ll carry on their form.

“We just want to keep collecting points, I think we know how good we can be and in that dressing room it’s all about putting it all together and over an extended period of time and I think if we do that we can be successful”, were the 27-year-olds aspirations for the rest of the season.
