Thornbury Town fail to capitalise on last minute chance but Callum Chalmers continues to get interest from rivals

Manager Richard Joyce says Thornbury Town had to rely on in-form striker Callum Chamber’s loyalty given rival teams’ interest.

The striker’s last minute chance was saved on Friday night against Slimbridge, but he was on the score-sheet once again, much to the liking of his manager.

“We’re getting a lot of interest from clubs, both legally and illegally in him, which is no surprise, really, with the amount of goals he scores and clubs knowing what our situation is, but he’s been a really loyal lad.

“[He] was playing two leagues below last season down at university in Exeter, and he’s come in, hit the ground running. I think he’s got nine goals so far in about 11 or so games, which is brilliant.

“He’s right at the top of the goal scoring charts, which for us is a massive plus because not only is he getting goals, but he’s giving us a really good outlet to play into.”

Thornbury Town lost 3-2 to Slimbridge at home in the Hellenic Premier League, after the South Gloucestershire-side failed to pull off a late comeback.

After Slimbridge went 3-0 up at Mundy Playing Fields, it was Chalmers and Marcus Wormwell scored within three minutes in the second half, but the former’s great shot was saved in the final minute to secure the three points for the visitors.

“I think ultimately it is really disappointing. I think the reality is if you concede three goals in any game of football, then you’re going to give yourselves a massive uphill battle.” Manager Richard Joyce said following the game.

“Weirdly, we probably deserved to get something from the game. In the end, we had a massive chance in stoppage time. Their keeper made a fantastic save.

“If that goes in, then we get something from the game and that would have been a very good point against a team that has quite good resources and just made some really good signings in terms of the players they brought in, so it’s disappointing to get nothing from it.”

Thornbury Town currently stand in 18th position with seven points, just above the relegation zone, and and even as Joyce feels like it has been a positive start to the season, the goal is to remain above the line.

“The reality of us is with our resources, or perhaps no resources really, we always know that just to be in the division again for the following season is a massive success story.

“So even though we had a fairly good start and we’ve had a little bit of a wobble recently, which is disappointing, and I feel like we should have more points on the board, but we haven’t and the league table never lies.

“I feel like the reality is probably the same thing we’re aiming for, which is to stay in the division as much as possible, keep on picking up points where we can probably have to get a few surprise results along the way.”
