Charlie McCann hopes his goals will help in Forest Green Rovers’ ambitions of promotion back to the Football League following their 1-0 win over Hartlepool United.
The 22-year-old midfielder recorded his fourth goal of the National League campaign with a sweeping strike from 18-yards on 71 minutes seeing his side remain third in the league and three points off leaders Barnet.
“It’s a good three points after a tough game and the tough week we’ve had with three games in a week and long journeys.
“We’ve definitely played better than a 1-0 but it doesn’t matter now that we’ve got the points so now we’ve got to keep rolling and keep the good performances coming,” McCann said.
Last minute winners against Altrincham and Sutton United before a strike against AFC Fylde has seen McCann already match his total from last season and his hoping his goals help Rovers towards their goal of promotion.
“It’s a nice feeling because I want to score goals, but I’m more bothered about the direction the teams going in this season as we want to win the league and go back up.”
“Manny [Osadebe] and Marcel [Lavinier] work it really well down the right and I spoke to Manny on Tuesday night, there was a moment where he could’ve cut it back to me, then obviously today that’s in the back of his head doing it straight away,” he said.
Substitutions made the difference for Rovers with Marcel Lavinier and Emmanuel Osadebe linking up to supply McCann for his goal less than five minutes after coming on.
Rovers quality in depth was put centre stage following that goal which McCann believes will be vital in the sides success this season.
“We said it in the changing room, we’re not going to win anything this season with just the starting XI that’s out there, we need everyone in the squad.”
“You’ve seen today that we’ve got quality throughout the whole squad. You see the lads we bought off the bench, they made the goal happen which is a good thing to have in our locker that we can bring strength off the bench,” he said.
McCann and Rovers will be looking to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to promotion rival Eastleigh on Saturday October 5th.
