Cheltenham Town permanently sign midfielder Tommy Backwell from Bristol City after short loan spell

Cheltenham Town have completed the permanent arrival of Bristol City midfielder Tommy Backwell who only arrived at the club on a loan basis 17 days prior.

Having made his debut just one day after arriving in the away defeat to Harrogate Town, the 21-year-old has made three consecutive starts in League 2 for the Robins.

On his first EFL start the former Yate Town and Bath City loanee scored the opener against Salford City and has made enough of a positive impression that his loan move has been made permanent.

The permanent signing of the number 26 has reduced the number of loan signings from six to five which is the maximum that the mid table Robins can have in a matchday squad.

Also incoming will be former Exeter City and Gillingham anchor Timothee Dieng who will likely replace Backwell and become the clubs sixth loan when he puts pen to paper on a deal to the end of the season.

Backwell arrived in a busy January window for Michael Flynn’s side after they secured the permanent signing of Darragh Power and loaned in Brentford’s Val Adedokun and Ashley Hay as well as Manchester United winger Ethan Williams.

The Bristol City youth product replaced Joel Colwill who was recalled by parent club Cardiff City and sent out on loan to Exeter City, while Owen Evans, Tom Pett, Harrison Sonha and Freddy Willcox have been loaned out to Barnet, Oldham Athletic, Wealdstone FC and Oxford City respectively.
