Cheltenham Town midfielder Ethon Archer shares his delight at new contract and debut campaign in professional football

Ethon Archer shared how proud he is to sign a new contract with Cheltenham Town until 2027..

The 22-year-old in the only player to feature in every Town league game this season and was rewarded with a new deal.

“Most definitely (I’m delighted), it’s something I’ve always wanted to do in life – be a footballer and to extend another year of me being a footballer is something that I’m truly grateful for.

“I’m happy here, I’m progressing here and hopefully that continues.” Archer said on his time with the Robins.

Town rejected offers in January for Archer from fellow Sky Bet League Two side MK Dons, with the side from Milton Keynes failing to turn the midfielder’s head.

“It was all a little bit alien to me (interest from MK Dons), with it being my first season in my professional career. Hopefully it continues to go at that pace and I keep on kicking on.”

The former Three Bridges player signed from National League South side Torquay United last summer and has hit the ground running in League Two where he has registered six goals and five assists this season, surpassing even his own expectations.

“I wouldn’t have thought that I’d be in this position many years ago, but here I am and I’m grateful for that.

“Back in July, it was just to get in the team and get as many minutes as possible. But, it kind of turned into get as many goals and assists as possible, it’s a bit like … wow!

“It was surprising, but that’s what I came here to do, I came here to play and I’m happy that I am playing. Now I want to continue bettering myself and helping the team win games and push for promotion.”

Following Tuesday night’s impressive 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon, Cheltenham are now just seven points adrift of the play-off places and Archer firmly believes they can make it.

“I still have hope. Numerically it can happen so who says we can’t do it?”

Archer’s rise has been quite remarkable and that was reflected in his impressive display against Wimbledon at Plough Lane, where he used to work as a steward on match days.

“I was a steward there at the back end of 2021, I was also playing non-league at the time so I wasn’t at every game but I would go an steward at midweek games.

“When I was there I always thought, imagine one day being part of this as a player and thank God it happened… it was a very special win.”

The Robins number 22 has shone in a number of positions this season. Primarily he figures on the left flank but more recently has starred in the heart of midfield.

“I’d always say I’m best suited to playing out wide, as that’s where I reckon I’m most effective when I’m getting at my opponent 1v1, trying to get shots and crosses off.

“But, I’m not opposed to doing the other part of the game in midfield, winning my challenges and duels.

This Saturday Cheltenham travel down to Wiltshire to take on Swindon Town at County Ground. Over 1,000 Robins are making the trip and Archer is continually grateful for their support.

“I’m thankful to the supporters and I feel like that amount of people can really push us on, on Saturday.”
