Champions League draw: Chelsea play Real Madrid, Manchester City take on Atlético Madrid

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League has been made, and the three English sides, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, will face Atlético Madrid, Benfica and Real Madrid respectively.

Chelsea are the defending champions after defeating City 1-0 in the 2021 final, a goal from Kai Havertz earning the Blues their second Champions League title.

The West London club, who beat Lille 4-1 on aggregate in the last 16, will take on Real Madrid in a repeat of last year’s semi-final.

2021 runners-up City will host Atlético Madrid in a second trip to Manchester in a matter of weeks for the Spanish side after they defeated Manchester United in the previous round.

Liverpool, who played in both the 2018 and 2019 finals, will meet Portuguese side Benfica after the team from Lisbon surprised Ajax to reach this stage for the first time since 2015-16.

The other quarter-final sees Villarreal take on Bayern Munich in their third Champions League last-eight appearance.

The draw for the semi-finals was also made in Nyon, and at that stage, there could be a repeat of last year’s final as the winners of Chelsea and Manchester City’s ties will play each other.

The other side of the draw looks slightly weaker, as either Villarreal or Bayern Munich will play Liverpool or Benfica.

The final will be held at the Stade de France in Paris after being moved from St Petersburg amid the conflict in Ukraine.
