The Red Roses triumph in the women’s Rugby World Cup has inspired women and girls of all abilities to give rugby a go and the effects of this is shown more than ever at the university level.

UOG Women’s Rugby marketing officer Jessica Hain believes the sport’s popularity will now improve on the back of the historic win.

The Red Roses have been amazing, their win last week was incredible they’ve been great for women’s rugby in terms of pushing the game for women and showing people that rugby is a women’s sport as well as a men’s sport.

“In terms of university level, it has really inspired a lot of people we have had an amazing intake of first years probably double from last year and they’re all doing well some who have never played rugby before and I feel like that’s all on the back of The Red Roses.”

The new intake of players is a promising sign of what’s to come for women’s rugby and as UOG eye another successful season they take part in a charity match against Cheltenham North Ladies to raise money for charity Brave Mind.

Brave Mind is a mental health charity that supports rugby players and the entire rugby community.

“It’s something that effects everyone and we really want to push their message, they’re a relatively new charity and we want to help them as its really important to us and our community.”

The game will take place on October 11 at Plock Court in Gloucester the fixture will mark their first game of the new season.

“I’m so excited it’s going to be really good it’s our first game of the season and it will be great preparation for our BUCS season, Cheltenham North Ladies are a very good team.”

With the season about to get underway UOG have their eyes set on BUCS.

“As a team we really want to perform the best we can in BUCS our first game is October 22 at home against The University of South Wales were really looking forward to pushing and beating all the teams in the league, we want to win.”

This winning mindset is deep rooted and the team will be desperate to relive moments such as their Varsity victory against Worcester last year.

“We have a lot to live up to from last year, but we can definitely do it.

We are going to start our varsity training in January so we have a lot of preparation it’s something all the girls look forward to every single year.”
