“We can’t give the ball away like we did today” – Cirencester Town manager James Mortimer-Jones gives his verdict on 4-3 loss to Roman Glass St. George

Cirencester Town boss James Mortimer-Jones believed his team could have done better in possession after their 4-3 home defeat to Roman Glass St. George.

Despite the seven-goal thriller, Mortimer-Jones felt like his side could have done more, “It was a crazy game but we’re disappointed with our performance.”

Harrison Reeves gave the Centurions the lead three minutes and the chaotic opening ten minutes prefaced events to come in the game.

“It was strange the way the game panned out, I think we scored against the run of play at the beginning but then I thought we deserved to go into the break ahead.”

Laurent Davis-Wilson pegged the hosts back 18 minutes in but only two minutes later Centurions captain Aidan Bennett restored Cirencester’s lead.

However, a two-minute double salvo from Jack Smith a minute into the second half turned the game on its head.

“It caught us cold [going down 3-2 so soon after halftime], we needed to settle down even though we were behind, settle the game down for five or ten minutes and then get ourselves back into it.”

Cirencester’s consolidation worked and just past the hour mark Harrison Reeves doubled his tally on the day and the Centurions drew level once more.

Roman Glass St. George stole the spoils through Joseph McLennan’s strike ten minutes from time, sinking Cirencester to a first defeat in six games

The result leaves Cirencester 15th in the table, looking to consolidate their place in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division after taking a voluntary relegation in the offseason.

Mortimer-Jones pointed to his side’s game management as a potential reason for letting the game slip away from them, “Questions come when you think should we have gone for the next goal or should we have shored it up?

“But we’ll talk about that and analyse that now. But we can’t give the ball away like we did today and that didn’t help us.”

The Centurions will look to move on swiftly from this defeat and head to Malmesbury Victoria on Tuesday night.

“The next few weeks look like it’s going to be a lot of Saturday into Tuesday games, we’ll start our preparation for that game now and we want to bounce back.

The immediate feeling in the dressing room is that we’d want a game tomorrow if we could have one to try and out the wrongs right, but we’ll try and prepare properly and give it a real go on Tuesday night.”
