Una Lue: Starting life in Plymouth after leaving Cheltenham Town Women

Former Cheltenham Town Women striker Una Lue made the decision to leave her first club to move onto a full-time contract at Plymouth Argyle during the Christmas break.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed her start to life in Devon, scoring 6 goals in 4 games.

Lue says that the switch from Cheltenham to Plymouth was something that happened quite quickly.

“I think I found out on a Sunday that there was an interest in me. I then went down to Plymouth on the Wednesday, decided I was going to make the move on Friday and then moved in the Monday after.

“So it all happened within the space of a week, but I was really happy about it all.”

Argyle have seen a massive upturn in form since the arrival of Marie Hourihan in July 2025. The former Chelsea, Manchester City and Birmingham City goalkeeper won the Women’s FA Cup three times and the WSL twice.

The 2024/25 season saw Arygle fighting for relegation for most of the season, but this year, the Pilgrims are serious contenders for promotion to the WSL2, currently sitting joint second in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division.

On working under Hourihan, Lue said “It’s been one big learning experience, which is exactly what I wanted the move to be.

“I’m excited to grow in this team, and I think Marie is the perfect person for me to do that under.”

Lue signed for Argyle on December 21, 2025, and then made her debut the same day, starting against Real Bedford at Home Park.

In the 74th minute, Lue opened her account for Argyle, tapping in a cross from Olivia Francis.

“We’d played Bedford already with Cheltenham, and I wasn’t nervous about making my debut. I was more excited than anything else. My family were all there to support me.

“Scoring made it a dream day. It was a great feeling to get a goal on debut.”

Family support is something that has always meant a lot to Lue, with her Dad having been present at every Cheltenham training session and match and this has continued at Plymouth.

“It’s a bit more of a travel for them, but it won’t stop them which is great!

“They’ve got all their Plymouth hats and scarves now, they’re all suited up! I feel really privileged to those people behind me.”

Lue did admit that starting her first game wasn’t much of a surprise to her. “After the conversations I’d had with Marie, I knew when I was joining what role I would be playing.

“I knew I was going to be important in the team. A full week of training before really prepared me for it, so it wasn’t a surprise.”

Lue continued her goal-scoring form, netting a hat-trick in a 9-0 victory over Billericay Town, who sit rooted to the bottom of the Southern Premier Division.

“It’s definitely been exciting for me to see what I can do in just a few weeks here and excited to see where I can get to as well.

“Training has obviously been a challenge, adapting to a new routine as well. But it’s a good challenge for me, and for my career, it was the natural progression for me to step into this team and environment.”

Lue joined another ex-Cheltenham forward in Argyle’s squad, Phoebie Poole. The Welsh International played under Tom Davies during the 2023/24 season, before moving to Oxford and then Plymouth.

Argyle have another full Welsh international in their squad, Tiana Tiesar.

On the quality in Plymouth’s squad, Lue said, “We know how special this group of people can be and how much potential we have. Playing with Phoebie again is brilliant, I loved playing with her before at Cheltenham, and to be here with her is really exciting and I can continue to learn off her!”

In the FAWNL, three teams will be promoted to the WSL2 this season to help increase the number of teams in the WSL and WSL2. The winners of both the Northern and Southern Premier Divisions will automatically be promoted, whilst the two second-placed teams will play each other in a one-off play-off, with the winner being promoted.

“The end of the season is really, really important for us and that is ultimately what we’re pushing for. It’s a very realistic target for us.”

With Plymouth currently sitting second, Lue admits that promotion is “100%” an aim for the season.

Lue’s second Argyle game was against fellow promotion hopefuls Watford. Whilst a 3-1 defeat for Plymouth, Lue scored her second in as many games.

Reflecting back on the game, Lue said, “I was still finding my flow that game, I did enjoy it and the way we played that game, I think we deserved something.

“We put in a great shift, ultimately they came away with it but when it comes down to it I think we are the better team and we have the potential to beat them in the end.”
