Trent Alexander-Arnold excluded as Gareth Southgate announces England squad for March internationals

Gareth Southgate has announced his England squad for internationals against Italy and Ukraine next week as the Three Lions look to start their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign positively.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been omitted after his recent struggles at club level, with Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier Southgate’s preferred options at right-back.

Arsenal’s Benjamin White has also been left out despite helping Arsenal to the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling hasn’t been included having missed the Blues’ game against Leicester City last weekend. Sterling is normally a stalwart in Southgate’s England side.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney is included, despite current investigations into the Bees forward’s betting allegations. Both Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Solly March miss out having been rumoured to be included.
