Three talking points from the Premier League weekend

Another weekend of premier league football has come to an end, and once again, there is a lot to talk about. A weekend full of goals and many players seeing red, but what were the standouts of the nine games played over the weekend?

Sinking Saints

Southampton have not had the easiest start to the Premier League season so far, only picking up one point from their first seven games before they faced Leicester this weekend. At home to Leicester seemed like a good way to get their season started and hopefully get some more points on the board, and most Saints fans probably thought there was a good chance of their first win of the season. It all looked very promising thanks to early goals from Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo, putting the Saints two goals ahead at halftime.

Leicester got a goal back in the 64th minute thanks to a goal from Facundo Buonanotte, but there was still hope for the home team. However, that hope took a major hit after Ryan Fraser saw red, and Jamie Vardy then equalised all within the same minute. Leicester finally found the winning goal in the 98th minute, making it an excruciating watch for all at St Mary’s Stadium. Southampton have been uninspiring to say the least so far this season, and the question to be asked is, when will they get finally get that win their so desperately looking for?

Cherries stun the Gunners

Arsenal have been their usual selves this season, and when people saw this fixture, I’m sure most thought it would be a bit of a walk in the park for the Gunners. I’m sure this could have been the case, but in the 30th minute, William Saliba saw red. Saliba has been such an important figure in Arsenal’s back line and has arguably been their most important player over the last year, so it was no surprise that Arsenal were shaky after the sending off.

The Cherries finally took advantage of the extra man in the 70th minute after a goal from Ryan Christie, and just nine minutes later Justin Kluivert doubled the lead and put the game to bed from the penalty spot. As there was no foul play involved, Saliba will only miss one game due to suspension for the Gunners. However, his suspension will mean he misses the huge clash against title challengers Liverpool.

More City Controversy

Manchester City found themselves struggling to find a second goal against Wolves at Molineux, drawing 1-1 in the 94th minute. But a 95th minute header from John Stones looked to have sealed all three points for City right at the death. The goal seemed totally fine watching it live, but in the replays, Bernardo Silva may have been disrupting Jose Sa’s vision from an offside position, standing in front of the Wolves keeper as the corner came in. The goal was originally disallowed after the linesman flagged for offside, but referee Chris Kavanagh changed the on-field decision after heading to the VAR monitor. This sparked uproar online, once again making people wonder whether top six clubs may get some decisions in their favour that other Premier League sides might not get. Along with this, a very similar scenario played out with Wolves last season, which saw former captain Max Kilman have a goal disallowed as a result of someone standing in an offside position in front of the keeper. Wolves goal last season was disallowed, but Man City’s goal was given, once again sparking controversy surrounding referee consistency again. City fans won’t be complaining though as they keep their position in the top two, and they continue their quest to make it five Premier League titles in a row.
