The Run-In: The battle for Women’s Super League title and fight for survival

As we approach the final few weeks of the FA Women’s Super League table, it’s still all to play for at both ends of the table.

Chelsea currently sit top on 51 points after their 2-2 draw against Manchester City last week, with their title rivals only two points behind.

Both teams have two fixtures left, with Emma Hayes’ side facing both Tottenham Hotspur and Reading in the next couple of weeks.

Manchester City face two teams fighting at the other end of the table in Birmingham City and West Ham, and it’s likely to go down to the final day.

Chelsea are the current champions after they were awarded the title last year after the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year their performances have earned them the top spot once again, but this time Gareth Taylor’s side are within touching distance.

At the bottom, four teams remain in relegation battle but it’s Bristol City that are most concerned as they sit bottom on 12 points.

Aston Villa only have 12 points themselves in their first season in the top flight, but a game in hand and two winnable games against Birmingham City and West Ham this week will give them a lifeline in the closing stages of the campaign.

Villa and City have both appointed new interim managers since the start of the year, with Matt Beard taking over for Tanya Oxtoby at Bristol City with the Australian on maternity leave, whilst Marcus Bignot joined the coaching set up at the midlands club in order to bring some experience to the youthful set up.

The two managers have overseen an upturn in form, which has dragged both Birmingham City and West Ham into the conversation in recent weeks.

Although, they sit two points clear from the bottom on 14 points which means they already have one foot in the league next season.

The Villans are in action midweek against city rivals Birmingham before they welcome West Ham to Villa park on Sunday.

These two games are likely to make the difference for Bignot’s side, provided they pick up points, given the Second-City derby is their game in hand.

Bristol City could cement their status if they are able to get something out of their remaining two games against Manchester United and Brighton, but they’ll be relying on Villa losing all three of their games in the process.

It’s still all to play for, nothing is certain and pressure is mounting on the teams at both ends of the table.
