Max Verstappen became Formula 1’s first Dutch World Champion in controversial circumstances over rival Lewis Hamilton as he won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a final lap pass.
The pass came in an incredible scenario which involved a disputed rule involving lapped cars overtaking the safety car but with one lap of racing left, Verstappen overtook Hamilton to cross the line first.
Verstappen denied Hamilton his record-breaking eighth World Drivers’ Title with the Briton still tied on seven with F1 legend Michael Schumacher.
The race ends the ‘Hybrid Era’ of Formula 1, with the next generation of cars with new designs and regulations coming to the sport in the 2022 season.
