Kim Bailey admitted he didn’t watch the first half of Chianti Classico’s Ultima Handicap Chase after his other horse, Trelawne, fell in the early stages.
There was some initial concern about his wellbeing after the fall, but thankfully he was up and able to walk away unscathed.
“It was not a great race to watch, I have a huge amount of thought for Trelawne and his owners because it was a difficult decision to run and when he fell I thought he was fine but when I saw him stand up on three legs I was really worried,” Bailey said.
“So much so that I didn’t see any of the first circuit because I was just watching him. when I saw he was fine I was relieved.”
The win was Bailey’s fourth ever at the festival and despite his initial worries, he was delighted with the winner.
He continued: “David made one mistake and I thought ‘oh no we’ve lost it’, but David rode a fantastic race and he was very confident before the race.”
The trainer said the win was huge for the yard and it’s what his team deserve for all of their hard work.
Twig ran a big race to battle home in second place, while Meetingofthewaters came home in third.
