Saturday November 25th 2023 will be a date that wrestling fans across the world will never forget.
After all the rumours and speculation, CM Punk made his truimphant return to WWE at the end of their show, Survivor Series, after nine years away from the company.
The wrestling star is no stranger to creating memorable moments and this past Saturday was no different. The owner of the wrestling news site Wrestling Republic, Ben Allison expressed his praise to WWE for bringing back Punk.
“This is huge for WWE,” Allison said.
“They are currently doing great business wise as it is, but CM Punk has shown time and time again that he’s very good for business. As soon as he left AEW a few months ago, their ratings on their weekly tv show Collision significantly dropped. CM Punk was also their top merch seller and no doubt he will be the same for WWE as well.”
CM Punk was released by rival wrestling promotion AEW in September for having a fight with one of the other wrestlers on the roster during the company’s UK show, All In.
Since that moment that began speculation and hope from wrestling fans on social media that Punk would return to WWE in his hometown of Chicago at Survivor Series. Allison mentioned although he is a controversial figure in wrestling, WWE made the right decision.
“He literally debuted last night and today he was number three on Google Trends, which is absolutely huge.” The Wrestling Republic owner stated.
“It’s absolutely fascinating and he’s a controversial figure he absolutely is, but WWE are the kings of capitalising business wise on controversial figures so I have no doubt it’s definitely what is best for business for them.”
The moment of Punk’s return got over 87 million views on social media in 24 hours, as well as being third on Google’s daily search trends with over 500,000 searches.
