“We thoroughly deserved the three points” – Forest Green Rovers boss Steve Cotterill praises response of players after 2-1 win at Morecambe

Forest Green boss Steve Cotterill pleased with ‘hard-working’ Rovers after they came from behind win against Morecambe 2-1.

Charlie McCann and Kyle McAllister’s first-half goals saw Forest Green Rovers claim a sixth win in 18 under Cotterill with the experienced boss who took charge of struggling Rovers in late January.

The visitors produced a fine performance on the day in what was their final away game of their League Two campaign.

“It could’ve easily been five or six,” added Cotterill. “Some of the buildup in our play was really good too.”

The Shrimps broke the deadlock when Charlie Brown, formerly of Rovers’ rivals Cheltenham Town, forced an error out of Vicente Reyes to bundle an effort over the line on 30 minutes.

Rovers responded quickly as eight minutes later McCann levelled the game as he fired past Morecambe goalkeeper Archie Mair.

The turnaround was complete shortly after when Christian Doidge found McAllister in the area for him to send a low-driven effort into the far corner.

Just after the hour mark, Reyes kept Rovers in front when he got down quick to deny a driven Gwion Edwards effort from 18-yards.

Doidge came close to getting himself on the scoresheet twice firstly being denied by a fantastic point-blank range stop from Mair.

Mair pulled off another reaction save from a Doidge near post header, keeping the Shrimps in the game.

Reyes made sure all three points were heading back to Nailsworth when he threw himself across his goal to deny Joel Senior’s free-kick attempt in stoppage time.

“Morecambe went one-nil up against the run of play, but we played really well today,” continued Cotterill.

“It’s never an easy game here, we worked really hard today and thoroughly deserved the three points.”

“It’s all about this season, and this season only. We have to play with professional pride, work hard and be honest. We have 90 minutes to finish off the season properly next week.

On Reyes: “I thought he showed a great amount of character, he made a great save at 2-1 and claimed a lot of crosses in the second half.”
