Indian Premier League suspended as COVID-19 cases in India pass 20 million

The 2021 Indian Premier League has been suspended as COVID-19 cases in the country continue to sky rocket.

The total number of coronavirus infections exceeded 20 million on Tuesday with 354,229 new cases within a 24 hour period continuing to stress the country’s health system.

The announcement comes a day after the IPL fixture between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore was postponed after Kolkata’s Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for Covid, leading to a statement from the IPL on Monday.

“The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the Kolkata Knight Riders prioritise the health and safety of everyone involved and all measures are being taken in that endeavour.”

The regular season was due to end on May 23 with the final on May 30, after eliminators and qualifiers.
