“I got lost in the moment” – Amber Hughes on last-minute winner for Wolves Women over Loughborough Lightning

Wolves Women’s Amber Hughes scored a 90+4th-minute winner in their 3-2 win over Loughborough Lightning.

The forward was delighted to secure the three points and maintain their unbeaten record, but wasn’t overly pleased with the manner in which it came.

“Obviously, the ideal scenario is winning comfortably, but sometimes those games are more special, and I think moving forward, it isn’t what we want to achieve this year.

“Maybe, though, that will be a standout game in months to come. We’ll look back and say how glad we are that we were able to get through.”

It was strong link-up play between Hughes and Racheal Quiqley that led to the goal, culminating in some wild celebrations.

“Yeah, the goal was brilliant. I think I got lost in the moment. Fair play to Quigs (Racheal Quigley), she’s come on and done her job perfectly.

“She played a brilliant ball, and to be honest, I thought I was offside. I just ran for it and hit it, and I was so glad it went in. The celebrations were brilliant.”

Hughes assisted Charlotte Greengrass for Wolves’ equaliser, and she praised the striker for her natural goalscoring ability.

“Charlotte is a natural goalscorer; she’ll always get on the end of things. There were a few in the game today that could have gone either way, but she’ll always carry on.

“She’s got that grit and determination, and she’ll always score goals. Away from that, she contributes so much more to the game as well, so she’s a great team player.”

After going into half-time 2-1 down, Wolves’ confidence and belief didn’t falter, something Hughes feels contributed massively to their turnaround.

“I think the feeling of the group this year is that the goal is always going to come. There were a few tough words said at halftime, and they were all fair.

“We worked well in the first half, but we should have been in a more comfortable position.

“This group have got such togetherness, and everybody believed coming out in that second half that we would turn it around.

“We want to keep winning and picking up points, but I think it’s just that togetherness, you can see in the celebrations it’s not just relief but us congratulating each other as well.”

Next up for Wolves is an FA Cup tie, live on TNT Sports, versus Stoke City on Friday night. Hughes says they won’t get too caught up in the occasion.

“We’re all very excited, but ultimately, we want to do the job in hand as well. It’ll be a massive occasion for us, friends and families, but we want to make sure we get through to the next round of the FA Cup, so that will be our full focus this week.”
