Henry Winter: “If you’re going to try and be brave and play a high line against Manchester United, Good Luck!”

Manchester United’s hot form continued on Sunday as they dismantled Premier League strugglers Leicester City 3-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to goals from the returning Jadon Sancho, and a double from the most inform player on the planet right now, Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has been in inspired form for Manchester United this season scoring 14 goals in 22 appearances, with only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Tottenham’s Harry Kane scoring more.

Chief football writer of The Times, Henry Winter, believes despite his impressive form there is still more to come from United’s star man.

“We are only seeing him (Rashford) at about 85%, he can go on and improve and improve because he’s got that athleticism, he’ll get with Benni’s (Benni McCarthy) help that intelligence of runs and ultimately become more of a poacher.”

It isn’t just Rashford’s resurgence that has been key to revitalising Manchester United this season, much of the applause belongs to their current manager Erik ten Hag who has transformed the club since his arrival back in April 2022, but Winter wasn’t surprised and knew Ten Hag was always going to impress at United.

“I’d been writing it about six months before (Ten Hag to Manchester United) you only needed to look at his time at Ajax or go back to Utrecht, he’s an outstanding coach, his press conferences are lowkey, he’s no Jose (Mourinho) or (Alex) Ferguson you just have to listen to him and you can see why the players respond to him.”

Ten Hag’s Manchester United career did not get off to the best start losing his first two games, but Winter always backed Ten Hag to succeed.

“I think there was a little bit of is he out of his depth from some pundits and critics, but anyone who is familiar with his work knew that once he had imposed himself (he would succeed).

I think he has just installed that man management, that respect, you just look at Ten Hag and he seems like when he gets his food from the canteen, he thanks everyone there.” Winter added.

Manchester United fans will be hoping that Ten Hag will bring back the glory days to Old Trafford and with United facing Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, Winter believes that the only way is up for the Red Devils.

“For Ten Hag it’s about the glory it’s about developing the team which clearly he is doing, they’re off to Wembley, everything is looking up for them.” He said.

Manchester United’s next game is against fellow giants of world football, FC Barcelona, at Old Trafford on Thursday, with a place in the Europa League quarterfinals up for grabs.
