The biggest event at this week’s Cheltenham Festival is the Gold Cup, with a historical three-peat that has not happened in two decades on the line.
Betting company Coral wants to keep that on the visiting fans’ mind, installing a giant inflatable Gold Cup over Cleeve Hill to celebrate Galopin Des Champs‘ bid to win three in a row. It took 60m2 of air to inflate it, enough to fill 900 party balloons.
Over 1000 members of the public recently took a survey conducted by Coral, which presented one conclusion – the Cheltenham Festival is simply too good to miss.
A whopping 46% of people said they either had lied, or would lie to their employer in order to watch or attend the festival.
The survey also suggests that the four-day-long event is currently the third most popular annual sporting event among British fans (50%), just behind the FA Cup (60%) and Wimbledon (54%), and ranking above the UEFA Champions League final and the F1 British Grand Prix.
46% of the surveyed people admitting they would or already lied to their boss about attending the event on weekdays, and 48% saying they would watch it sneakily on the background.
“It’s always a great week, but this year we have Galopin Des Champs going for the Gold Cup hat-trick, something only four horses have previously achieved, so next Friday’s feature race really will be too big to miss, a bit like the giant Gold Cup we flew over Cleeve Hill!,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
The Cheltenham Festival begins this afternoon (Tuesday, March 11) – keep across all the action on our X and Instagram pages.
