Gloucester City gear up for home bout with mid-table Hanwell Town looking to bounce back after two defeats in a row

Gloucester City AFC are looking for a response at home to Hanwell Town, after suffering two league defeats in a row, for the first time this season.

The Southern League Premier South side currently sit fourth in the league, 13 points away from top of the tree Merthyr Town, with eight games to go. It is looking more and more likely that the Tigers will have to go through the playoffs, as only the league winner is promoted automatically.

Mike Cook’s side suffered a shock 2-1, home defeat to third-place Walton & Hersham just two weeks ago, before travelling to Hungerford Town‘s Bulpit Lane, undergoing a narrow 1-0 loss, putting the title hopes well out of the Tigers’ reach.

City host the Geordies on Saturday at the TigerTurf Stadium hoping that two wrongs make a right, pushing for the top two playoff spots.

The play-off format consists of second, third, fourth and fifth all battling it out to try and get that second promotion spot, with the second and third spots more valuable, as those teams are granted the home advantage in those crucial playoff games.

City defender Dan Ball has been very consistent at the back in his first season at the club, and is ready and raring to go, as we enter the final stages of the 42-game season.

“We want to show a response after the last two games, we just want to make sure we do as well as we can right up until the end of the season to finish as high up as possible.

“The Walton game was a really tight game, and the Hungerford game we tried to get the ball down but it just didn’t work. We cannot dwell on these results. It’s time to move on to Hanwell and hopefully we can put on a goof performance for the fans.”
