Forest Green Rovers record appearance holder and former Gloucester City midfielder Alex Sykes appointed as Cinderford Town boss

Forest Green’s record appearance holder Alex Sykes has been appointed as the new manager of Southern League Division One South outfit Cinderford Town.

Sykes has replaced Steve Cleal, who resigned from his role as first-team manager on October 16.

Cinderford currently sit fourth bottom of the Southern League Division One South, with just two wins from their first 11 games, however they did progress in the FA Trophy on October 30 with a penalty shootout win over Thatcham Town.

Despite Sykes only being 47, he has plenty of managerial experience in Gloucestershire, having managed at Bishop’s Cleeve and Shortwood United.

Sykes also enjoyed a successful playing career in the county, and he is considered a legend at both Forest Green and Gloucester City.

In a club statement, Cinderford Town said: “Alex has a track record of positive player recruitment and has excellent links with both local senior clubs and league clubs.”

The Forest of Dean club have also confirmed that Will Morford will be staying on as assistant manager. Morford has taken caretaker charge of The Foresters since Cleal’s departure. The former Gloucester City and Hereford coach joined Cinderford’s management team in July 2020.

Sykes’ first game in charge of Cinderford is away at promotion-chasing Sholing on Saturday, November 6. His first game managing at The Causeway will be against Plymouth Parkway on November 13.
