Opinion: Erling Braut Haaland – the greatest striker ever to grace the Premier League

Erling Haaland has not been in England too long but it is clear that he could go on to be the greatest striker in Premier League history.

The Norwegian forward has undoubtedly set the Premier League on fire this season. The goal machine has a fantastic scoring record, with 48 goals in 42 games in all competitions for Manchester City.

The 22-year-old Norwegian closes in on the all time record for Premier League goals scored in a season, he is, in many people’s minds the greatest striker ever to play in the Premier League.

The stats don’t lie

If Haaland continues his goals per minute until the end of the season he would finish the season on 67 goals in all competitions and 40 in the Premier League. Currently Haaland has 32 Premier League goals, 2 behind the all time equal record holders Andy Cole and footballing legend Alan Shearer who both bagged 34. Between 1992-94 Premier League consisted of 22 teams, which equated to a 42 game season. With 4 games less than this in the modern day Premier League campaigns, Haaland’s heroics just look all the more impressive.

In all competitions, Haaland has taken 122 shots and scored 48 goals with a shooting accuracy of 61% and a goal conversion of 39 %. Scoring at an average of 1.14 goals per game, if Haaland can maintain this form he could finish the season on 43 Premier League goals.

The pundits say

Haaland has an uncanny ability to be at the right place at the right time. Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer, who leads the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts with 260, is resigned to the notion that the star will easily break the current single season record of 34.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was seen standing applauding Haaland off the pitch after the 22 year old bagged 5 goals against RB Leipzig in the Champions League tie.

What does Haaland think himself

When discussing his start to life in Manchester, Haaland was characteristically blasé.

“I’m a striker, I love to score goals,” says the forward, “But my focus is not on scoring goals but on getting the chances. If I get the chances, there’s a good chance I’ll score.

“I’ve been a striker my whole life, I’ve always been concerned just about getting in the box.

“It’s about finding the small details in the game that can make me and the team better.”

The fans love him

Haaland has been the answer Manchester City has been looking for. Since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund he has quickly become a fan favourite.

Haaland appeals to fans, coaches and statisticians alike, thanks to his great ability and unique character. For as long as he is in the Premier League he will continue to establish himself as an all time great.
