England’s Test series in Sri Lanka cancelled

England’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka has been postponed due to the coronavirus.

The first Test was due to start inĀ Galle on Thursday, 19 March.

Joe Root’s side were in the process of facing a Sri Lanka Board President’s XI in the build up to the series, but that was cancelled once play on Day Two was underway.

“The physical and mental well-being of our players and support teams is paramount,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

“We would like to thank our colleagues at Sri Lanka Cricket for their outstanding support and assistance throughout this situation,” the statement added.

“We look forward to returning to Sri Lanka in the near future to fulfill this important Test series.”

Elsewhere, Australia’s three-match series against New Zealand will be played behind closed doors, whilst the IPL has been pushed back from theĀ 29 March to 15 April.
