Buster Davies says Longlevens AFC “battled well” as they advance to Floodlit Cup Final

Longlevens AFC have progressed to the final of the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup after their 1-0 win away at Worcester Raiders last night.

Peter Boyle and Buster Davies’ side took the lead after just 11 minutes through a well-worked goal, polished off by Alex Knight.

The Gloucestershire side performed well for the next half an hour, nullifying any threat Raiders posed, until Drew Brei was forced into making a fantastic reflex save.

Dan Roddis was booked just before the halfway mark for a professional foul, halting a Raiders counter-attack.

Levens came out strong again in the second half, as Lewis Driscoll’s corner was palmed away by the goalkeeper, but striker Ben Lodge could not convert under pressure.

It then became more and more defensive for the away side as they had their sights set on the final, breaking the game up and making it scrappy when necessary.

Davies was very happy with what he saw from his side.

“We battled well. We had a game plan, and the boys executed it perfectly. The entire squad of 16 were excellent; they bought into what we wanted.

“The back line was excellent, and what a save that is from Drew in the first half. The boys put their bodies on the line, and I think they deserved to win.

“There wasn’t a huge amount of positive goal mouth action from either side but I think we just about edged it.”

Despite that, Levens’ goal was very nicely worked and topped with a composed finish from Knight.

“Lodge has done brilliantly in the build-up and kept his composure to play it to Knighty. He’s put it in the back of the net, and we’ll take that all day.”

Levens have to wait for tonight’s game between Hungerford Town Reserves and Malmesbury Victoria to find out who they’ll face in the final.

Davies has no preference: “I know a little bit more about Malmesbury, I dont live far from there so I’ll go down tomorrow and watch the game.

“Hungerford, I imagine, will be a young, ex-academy type team. I’m looking forward to doing a bit of a scouting report tomorrow, and we’ll see where we’re at for the final.”

The final will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at Stonehouse Town Football Club.
