Alfie May calls for calm amidst the fire at Cheltenham Town

Alfie May is optimistic that Cheltenham Town can bounce back despite failing to win any of their last 10 matches across all competitions.

The Robins last registered a league victory in a 2-0 triumph at Gillingham on November 23 and have plummeted to 17th in League One.

They remain nine points adrift of the relegation zone but a tricky run of fixtures could haul them into the relegation dogfight.

Despite facing three of the top four in their next five games, May believes Cheltenham can translate their promising performances into results.

“Our performance is there but sometimes in football you don’t fall on the right side,” May observed.

“Football is crazy! I think we lost one in 11 games [in mid-October until late-November] – so we need to stick together, keep the performance high and try to get the three points.”

The biggest criticism of Cheltenham in recent matches has been their inability to retain a lead. They took the lead in the three successive draws against Oxford United, Burton Albion and Charlton Athletic respectively, before their latest 1-0 defeat at Rotherham on Saturday.

They were also vital points dropped in their quest to fight relegation in games they were realistically expected to win. League leaders Wigan, fresh off the back of a 17-match unbeaten run, will arguably pose an even bigger threat than Rotherham.

Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers also await them in February and the gap at the end of this tricky period could be much tighter. Nevertheless, results across League One prove that the underdogs can prevail with Fleetwood Town conquering Rotherham 1-0 on January 15 and Lincoln City winning 3-1 over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

May insists that the strong mentality of the side will benefit them against the heavyweights in League One.

“This league has shown that anyone can beat anyone – it’s just about how you turn up on the day,” May said.

“It doesn’t matter what league position they are in or who they are. It’s another game of football and everybody is fighting for three points.

“As long as we have the right mindset and togetherness then we’ll step onto that pitch and give our all for 95 minutes.”
