Alfie May has become increasingly likely to leave Cheltenham Town in the summer as a result of his excellent goalscoring form.
May scored two goals in Town’s latest fixture, a 3-1 win over Forest Green Rovers in League One on Saturday.
The brace took his tally to 18 for the season, seven shy of top goalscorer Jonson Clarke-Harris’ 25.
But the 29-year-old is the only man in the top five to play for a bottom-half side, accentuating his achievement.
May’s Cheltenham career
May signed for Cheltenham from Doncaster Rovers in 2020 for a fee of just £5,000, having failed to nail down a place in their starting lineup.
He helped the Robins into the League Two playoff places in his debut campaign, with six goals in 14 appearances, and followed that up with nine goals in the 2020-21 season as Michael Duff’s side won the title.
After a decent start to life at Whaddon Road, nobody saw May’s recent improvement coming, especially not in a higher division.
He netted 23 times as Cheltenham remained in League One last season, while his 18 in this campaign has ensured their safety again. He is now, undoubtedly one of the club’s all-time greats.
May to leave?
On the back of two impressive seasons, and with his contract expiring in June, many are suggesting that May could be on the move in the summer transfer window.

And, approaching his 30th birthday, the striker could see this as his last opportunity to test himself at a higher level.
He may not be as sought-after as Clarke-Harris, for example, but signing for a team in the Championship is certainly on the cards.
Especially on a free transfer, goal-shy Championship clubs would be foolish not to consider taking a punt on the Robins star.
