When the chances came, I didn’t finish them – Joe Hanks reflects on missed opportunities in Gloucester City’s Somerset stalemate

Gloucester City captain Joe Hanks feels he could’ve have offered more in front of goal during his side’s 0-0 draw with Frome Town.

“The main chances fell to me, and I wasn’t able to put them away,” Hanks said.

A lot has been said on the pitch by the City management and staff as it’s not what they are accustomed to.

Hanks, like his manager Mike Cook, highlighted how much of a part the conditions played in their result.

“It was a difficult game in the sort of the circumstances and conditions,” he said.

As the Tigers who were forced to a goalless draw, the club’s leading goal scorer this season applauded the form of last weekend’s opposition saying: “They had been on a good run, but we wanted to go there and try and win.”

It was the third draw away from home in the league for the title chasers which joined with a draw and two wins at home leaves them on a six-game unbeaten streak.

Hanks, who works as a Policeman in his time away from semi-professional football said: “we need to try and push forward and get some wins” as the club suffered another damage blow to their title chances.

The Tigers are competing with Merthyr Town and AFC Totton for the Southern Premier division South title.

Merthyr extended their lead at the top after scoring two goals in the last minute which hasn’t been the first time this has occurred but Hanks believes his side can match that.

“We are capable of doing that,” he said.

City now sit 12 points behind Merthyr as Totton place just above them with a six-point gap.

The Tigers face off against the Southampton based side of Totton on Saturday at the TigerTurf stadium, but they will first have to tackle Bracknell Town who beat them at home last time out.

Hanks spoke about the game this Tuesday against Bracknell saying: “they have already beaten us at home, so we’ve got to go there and beat them in their own backyard.”

A side that has been riddled with injury this year Hanks hopes the injuries begin to return soon saying: “this game comes quite quick and fast so hopefully we can get some of the lads that are injured back out there soon.”

Although City face Bracknell tomorrow night their main focus will be on the big clash with Totton this Saturday as Hanks predicts changes for the tomorrow’s encounter.

“A couple of injuries in and around the squad so you think the manager will rotate tomorrow considering this busy schedule with Totton on the weekend,” he said.
