Varsity tennis captain Tristan Scurr looks ahead to what could be “a real struggle” in potential match against last years opponent in Varsity 2025

Tristan Scurr has been named as the 2025 varsity tennis captain for the University of Gloucestershire. The sports scholar has been playing competitive tennis since the age of 12. A privilege for any sportsperson to represent a whole team, a position Scurr has worked hard for.

“I started playing tennis when I was three and since then it’s been my whole life, I compete in nationals each year, and I don’t do much else other than tennis and uni work.

“I’m a massive fan of tennis, I love playing tennis and I wouldn’t know what I’d do without the sport”.

In 2022 he made it to the finals of Play Your Way Wimbledon, then to the quarter-finals in 2023. Scurr gave 2024 one last shot which proved a good decision as the second-year student went on to win the competition Play Your Way Wimbledon. This then put Scurr through to a regional stage and then to a national final played at Wimbledon.

Since Scurr has been at the helm of UoG tennis he’s not only grown and bettered the side but also created a space where women can perform at this year’s varsity.

“We’ve got some singles matches, some doubles matches for both men and women at varsity and that was a big push for us this year – we really wanted to have a women’s team playing, we hope it’s a chance for everyone to have a go at playing”.

UoG tennis have competed in the Bucs league this year. As a team, some results have been tough to take but the individuals have improved as a team.

With just a fortnight to go until varsity, the UoG tennis team are preparing themselves for another tough test.

“Last year we lost four two, I won my matches and that’s something I’m hoping to continue this year, but if it’s the guy I’m thinking of it’s going to be a real struggle, he’s a good player”.

The TV production student has a very practical course which can take up a lot of extra work and time. Like Tristan, many sporting students find it hard to juggle their university course load with their sporting timetable.

“Sometimes it can get a lot, my lecturers are helpful they always allow me to play the matches when it comes to it, I’m a sports scholar so they understand and they very much allow me to do that, I have an interest to the course so I always catch up, overall it can be a struggle sometimes but I think I handle it quite well, for now”.
