UoG Goalkeeper Dan Smith is “Confident” that they can win both the league and varsity

Vice Captain and goalkeeper Dan Smith believes his teammates have enough to clinch promotion on Wednesday afternoon.

UoG sit second in the tier 3 western league table, but a point away against Plymouth on Wednesday would mean UoG leapfrog Exeter into first place and would be crowned league champions.

“I am really confident, as a team we are playing with confidence.

“We’ve trained well leading up to this game, we have a strong, fully fit squad, and we will approach this game like the rest of the games this season and go from there.

“We’re playing positive football and beating them (Plymouth) 3-0 at home quite comfortably, but it’ll be a tough test as their pitch isn’t the greatest, so we have to be ready as a team, and needing everyone being up for it, but I think we’ll get the job done.”

The first team have got 22 points from a possible 24 so far; Smith has played a pivotal part this season, including four clean sheets in eleven games in all competitions:

“Individually I feel I’ve played well, conceded six goals in eight games, two clean sheets, not conceded more than one goal in any game and made some good saves.

“Our overall performance as a team, over the season we’ve gelled well together and I think we’ve won seven and drawn one, just clearly states we’ve been playing really well.

“Hopefully Wednesday I can add to my tally of clean sheets, and if I do, I know we’ve got the result we needed.”

With Varsity in three weeks, UoG football are looking to bounce back from their defeat last time out against Worcester, losing 5-2:

Smith played in last year’s varsity match and this year is hoping to win, and leave on a high in his final year:

“Yeah, this is my last varsity as well, last year, can’t wait. First varsity last year I was quite nervous, I think especially how the team have played this year, I’m really looking forward to it.

“Worcester have struggled in the league above us, and it looks like they’re going to get relegated, so with the confidence we have as a team, I believe on our day we can beat anyone.”

For Smith, this would be the perfect send-off on his last appearance for the university football team:

“As it’s my last game in a UoG shirt, winning varsity, and winning the league, nobody can ask for better than that, especially with that happening in my last year potentially, so if we do win both, I can’t ask for any more than that so I’d be really happy, so hopefully we can get the job done.”
