“I haven’t slept in days” – Gloucester City manager Mike Cook delighted after first win against Alfreton Town

Gloucester City pulled off their first win under new boss Mike Cook with a 3-0 demolition of Alfreton Town

“I’m ecstatic, it was a well deserved win,” said an emotional Cook.

“We were the better team, we knew what they were going to be doing and what they’re all about so I’m happy from a coaches point of view to get that right.

“The lads implemented the plan perfectly today and done great to get three goals which is something we have struggled with this season.”

Gloucester City signed Alefe Santos last week, the Brazilian winger made his debut on Saturday getting an assist and man of the match.

Cook felt inspired by his performance: “I thought he was absolutely superb today, he really is a creative player, he doesn’t score many goals but he gets a lot of assists and he can make teams tick so we are happy to have him on board.”

The Tigers felt hard done by last week after a 2-1 loss to Southport – the Merseyside team left it until the to take home a 2-1 win thanks to an 88th minute winner.

Cook felt the pressure leading up to Alfreton: “I haven’t slept for four days because I was that upset after the goal, I wasn’t angry at the lads but the situation we put ourselves in to concede that late on.

“However it’s the next week and we have to move on and we did that today, we knew they would be physical so we knew Ben (Richards Everton), Jamie (Reckord), and Ty (Duffus) had a job to do and they done exactly that so I was happy.”

Danny Wright has had a rough few weeks having not scored a goal prior to Saturdays game, though the 39-year-old striker would grab a goal and an assist to help lead Gloucester to three points.

Cook felt it was only a matter of time: “He’s a great character, he’s 39 but he doesn’t play like it, we’ve seen him in training and it was clear all he’s been needing was a goal.

“We’ve done a lot with him and the other strikers in the last few weeks about movement and where they should be shooting from, left or right side, if the balls running away or coming to them, so it’s brilliant to see that work out”.

Gloucester City are set to travel to top of the table Tamworth on Tuesday evening in the hope that they can continue on from their win.
