Ben Wheaver was delighted after his double helped the University of Gloucestershire secure the Western Tier Three title.
Gloucestershire humiliated Plymouth University after winning 8-0, with captain Dylan Venn bagging himself a hat-trick, in addition to Macsen Rhys-Williams, Rory Hunt and Olly Dark also getting their names on the scoresheet.
With the centre back having yet to score in the 2024/25, Wheaver picked the perfect time to open his account and the 20-year-old was beaming.
“First two goals of the season, the first one was just a simple header, the centre half said he was going to mark me but he didn’t!
“Second one I’ve stayed up from a loose free kick and the GOAT Adam Smith has put it across the box, thought I was going to take it on first time but I would’ve missed so took a touch and passed it in.”
Despite travelling to Devon to take on a bottom of league Plymouth, Wheaver was under no illusions about the test they would be up against and that they could not afford any complacency.
“Coming into the game it was always going to be difficult because they are bottom of the league, we are top of the league unbeaten but I think we stuck to our task, warmed up well and then the goals went flying after the first five, I think they gave up after the first half and we stuck to it.
“They came into the game at the end which was expected but we stuck to our task and won 8-0 so cannot really complain.”
Wheaver who also plays semi-professionally as a striker for Wolverhampton Casuals in the Midlands League Premier Division was thrilled for his team-mates who are in the final year of University and helped finish off the season with a bang.
“Absolutely massive especially for the boys like [Olly] Dark, Joe Littlewood, Dylan Venn, Rory [Hunt], [Ryan] Banfield, and Dan Smith, so for the boys to win in their last year it’s unreal, hopefully carry it into varsity but it’s been a really good season unbeaten in the league so up the Glos!”
