Louis Sharp’s journey on becoming the 2024 GB3 Champion – “Doing such a fantastic job given the sacrifices we’re all making as a family”

Moving across the world to win two championships in a row at 17 years old is exactly what F3-bound Louis Sharp has done to grasp the GB3 Championship win at Brands Hatch.

His father, Jason Sharp, also moved from their home in Christchurch to Milton Keynes alongside his son to allow him the opportunity to race single-seaters in Europe. “He’s doing such a fantastic job given the sacrifices we’re all making as a family but we have some amazing people that are making this happen. David (Dicker) number one, we would not be here without his support.”

The Nottingham-born New Zealander has been supported by Rodin Cars’ founder David Dicker since the age of 14 when he first entered FIA British Formula 4 2023, 15 months later he’s the champion of two of Britain’s best feeder series.

Sharp expressed his gratitude, “I’m very lucky and very happy to be in this position. Got to give a big thank you to my team and my dad, he’s been over here with me every step of the way so most of my success is down to him”

The young prospect achieved five wins and a further five podiums throughout the season, all within his first year in the GB3 championship, “Rookie season in GB3, they got me up to speed very quickly and obviously, they’ve turned out to be a very good team, of course, I knew that because it’s my third year with the team but I can’t ask for a better place to be.”

However, his success hasn’t gone unnoticed. Due to being born in the UK, the BRDC has recognised him to be nominated as one of the four finalists of the Silverstone Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award, a prestigious award that has had previous winners such as Lando Norris and George Russell.

In order to win the award, Sharp will have to take on a number of tests such as taking to the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, driving GT3s, LMP3s and the MSV Formula 2 car, “It’s very special to me. At this stage it’s only the top four, so it’s going to be important to keep working and training hard, so I can give it my everything at Silverstone.

“I’m really looking forward to the competition. I’ll be driving three cars that I haven’t driven before – in fact, I’ve never driven a competition car with a roof over my head, so the LMP3 and the GT car will be a bit of a challenge. There’s going to be a lot to learn and some of the finalists may have a little bit of an advantage having driven these cars before but, it’s a massive honour to be selected and I’m determined to enjoy what’s going to be a really exciting experience.”
