Joe Root and Ben Stokes go big as England post 500 against West Indies in Barbados

Root and Stokes hit big hundreds as England post 500+ for the first time in over a year.

It was a rare good day for the English batsman as Joe Root’s men dominated the Windies bowlers in Barbados. The innings was led by the captain and vice-captain as both of them ended the innings with centuries each.

Root was unbeaten on his century from the night before and contributed to a 129 run partnership with Stokes before getting dismissed for 153. Stokes was back to his free flowing best as he smashed 120 at a strike rate of 92.

Stokes’ return to form is relieving news for England as their test batting has been under constant scrutiny since getting thrashed 4-0 against Australia down under.

The hundred was Stokes’ fifth against West Indies and 11th overall with his last international century also coming against the West Indies in 2020.

The three-match test series is currently tied at 0-0 after the first game ended in a draw. Root and his side will be desperate to go 1-0 up to get within range of a rare away series win.

The West Indies batsmen were positive with their intent despite losing an early wicket in their innings. They ended Day 2 on 71/1 with the skipper Kraig Brathwaite unbeaten on 28.

With veterans Broad and Anderson axed from the side, a lot of the wicket taking responsibilities rest on the shoulders of Chris Woakes and youngster Saqib Mahmood.

Day 3 of the second test match is set to get underway at 2 pm BST today.
