“We got up at half three in the morning,” said multiple fans as the Irish entered town on Patrick’s Day at the Cheltenham Festival.
Day three of the festival is well underway, and the Irish presence is as strong as ever.
For many fans, the week is about more than just racing—it’s a chance to soak in the atmosphere, enjoy the camaraderie, and, of course, back some winners.
“We’re all from Ireland, we flew over this morning.
“The flight was at half six, but it was a nice start to the day after a few pints at the airport. For sure, we’re singing.”
While many festivalgoers plan their visits meticulously, some are keeping their options open depending on how the week unfolds.
“We’re mostly just here for the Wednesday at the moment, but that could change. It depends how Tuesday and Wednesday go—we might be here for Gold Cup day.”
For some, Cheltenham is a well-trodden path, while others are experiencing the excitement for the first time.
“I have been here twice already, and it’s these guys’ first time.”
When asked what draws them to the festival, the answer is simple: the thrill of it all—and a few perks along the way.
“The craic, I suppose, and the free house. Free accommodation always helps, but yeah, of course, the racing as well.”
One aspect of the festival limiting their attendance is the struggle for accommodation, with many young adults benefitting off fellow university students living in Cheltenham.

The festival’s St Patrick’s Thursday holds a special allure for many attendees.
“Tuesday we look forward to—the first day always has a buzz about it.”
“There’s something about it that you don’t get much anywhere else, really.”
And when it comes to betting tips, they’re more than confident in their picks.
“If you aren’t backing Kopek Des Bordes, Lossiemouth, and Constitution Hill quadrupole, you’re clueless—it’s free money.”
As the festival continues, one thing is certain: the Irish contingent is here to make the most of every moment, on and off the track.
