International roundup – Cheltenham star features for Wales U21 amidst chaos of admin error

Cardiff City loanee Joel Colwill was the sole Gloucestershire football representative during the international break over the weekend.

Colwill played 61 minutes for Wales under-21s before being replaced by former Cheltenham Town loanee Oli Hammond.

The 19-year-old who is at Cheltenham on a season-long loan from Cardiff City struck the post early on as Wales slipped to a 2-1 defeat in front of a crowd of over 2000 at Rodney Parade in Newport.

Colwill played alongside another former Gloucestershire club loanee, midfielder Charlie Savage who was on loan at Forest Green Rovers in 2023.

However, a huge admin error prior to kickoff meant that Joel Colwill’s brother, Rubin Colwill was unable to feature alongside him in midfield, as well as a host of other key names for this Welsh squad having to miss out.

The result is damaging for Wales’ hopes of making a historic qualification for the under-21 European Championships next summer in Slovakia.

The Dragons will now have to rely on results elsewhere to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Joel Colwill has been a big addition to a Cheltenham Town side that has struggled so far in League Two so far this campaign after a big squad turnover in the summer saw 19 new faces come in at Whaddon Road.

Colwill was one of the additions and he started his Robins career brightly scoring two goals, most crucially the winner, in a 3-2 opening-day victory for Michael Flynn’s side at home to Newport County.

Since, Colwill has struggled alongside the entirety of the Cheltenham side who have quickly slipped to find themselves 21st in League Two only three places above Morecambe in the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, the only other international in Cheltenham’s squad, Arkell Jude-Boyd was unable to earn a second international call-up for Saint Lucia due to the hamstring injury that he sustained while scoring a superb equaliser for the Robins earning them an away point in a 1-1 draw against Chesterfield.
