‘I could see a good reason that they could have called this one off’ – Cirencester Town manager, James Mortimer-Jones, on fixture backlog, Andy Lewis departure, and potential cup run

James Mortimer-Jones, Cirencester Town manager, says it is ‘frustrating’ to have so many games postponed due to the weather. “I could see a good reason that they could have called this one off today even though it wasn’t waterlogged.

“It is what it is at this level. Some teams have got a huge amount of fixtures left obviously with our pitch at home and we do not get many of the home ones off unless it snows.

“It’s frustrating sometimes, because we really wanted to play on Tuesday night (11th), given the poor result on Saturday (8th).”

Despite not being able to play in the week, their game went ahead on Saturday, and Mortimer-Jones’ men picked up a 3-0 win away at Thornbury Town where the manager was able to watch them in the week prior to the fixture.

“I managed to watch them on Tuesday night at Slimbridge, and they had a tremendous result there (2-0 win). I think we got the better of them today (Saturday).”

Mortimer-Jones has recently confirmed the departure of Lewis Thorne but also the arrival of Andy Lewis on a dual registration from Cinderford. He hopes Andy will be an ‘ideal fit’ for his side.

“He’s a great character, good to have around, he needs a few minutes. We need some experience to help our younger boys so it’s an ideal fit for us at the moment.”

Cirencester are almost safe in the league as they sit 20 points clear of the drop zone with six more to play. However, bottom side Malmesbury Victoria have to play 16 more games and are just 22 points away from The Centurions.

They remain in the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup where they host Corsham Town at The Corinium Stadium in the third round.

“We’re taking every gamer seriously. It’s nice that we’ve got that cushion in the league. We can try and get a couple of rounds of the cup and we will see where it takes us.

“It gives us a chance to use the squad because we’ve got a lot of players who want to play on the pitch and it’s a really nice feeling at the moment.”
