Cirencester Town manager Mortimer-Jones “delighted” with progressing to cup semi-final

Cirencester Town are through to the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup semi-finals after a 2-0 victory away to Malmesbury Victoria last night after two late goals from Kyle Pitts.

Manager James Mortimer-Jones was “delighted” with the result as they had “got ourselves into a position in the league where we could have a full-strength go at it tonight. The youngsters were still involved, and we’re delighted to get over the line and through to the semi-finals.”

Despite having a slightly depleted squad for the fixture, Mortimer-Jones was happy to have Finley Bell back in the side, while also being cautious with a few players who are on the road to recovery.

“Finn Bell’s on his break so it has worked out perfectly for us to get him back involved, we’ve looked a bit unsure in the final third, so it was ideal timing for that. We have still got two or three missing tonight; Jack Freeman with illness and Andy Lewis is out for two or three weeks and there are still two or three carrying knocks, but they are putting in shifts for the team at the moment.”

Mortimer-Jones looked ahead to the weekend for their fixture at home to Longlevens, with a fortnight’s break without a game after this weekend, the emphasis is on leaving it all out there with plenty of time for recovery afterwards.

“Always a tough battle against Longlevens, they are always a hard-working side, it’ll be nice playing at home, hopefully, we can get the ball down and play. If we need to change it up, we have proved we can do that in some of the away games, but it’s one we are looking forward to because we’ve got a two-week break after that, so we want to put all our efforts into Saturday.”

Goalscorer Kyle Pitts relived his second goal with him “trying something out of the ordinary and it has come off. I think its bounced over the goalkeeper, but a goal is a goal at the end of the day.”

Pitts also looked ahead to the semi-final and this weekend’s fixture against Longelevens with the quick turnaround between fixtures always a difficulty for players.

“This is the last cup competition that we’re in, so it’s what we really want to do well in now so I’m looking forward to the semi-final and hopefully we can push on.”

“The turnaround between games can be tough at times, playing Saturday and Tuesday so it does play on your legs a bit, it will be a tough one Saturday and we fully expect it to be tough because know how tough Longelevens are.”
