Cheltenham Town scholar Ibrahim Olateju has been called up to Nigeria U20’s squad as they get ready ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations that will take place next month.
The 18-year-old Olateju who spent time on loan last season at Bishop’s Cleeve and this season spent a month loan at Malvern Town adds to the growing list of Robins youngsters who have been called up internationally over the past year and a half.
The forward has been at Town since under-11 level and now is in his second year as a scholar after drawing glances at Widden Primary School.
He has also had eyes from Premier League and Championship sides who are keeping an eye on his progress.
He joins Tom King who was called up for England, Max Williams and Leo Foley both for Wales who have been called up to their respective national teams since 2023.
The Super Eagles will be taking on Egypt, South Africa and Morocco in the tournament which will be hosted in Cote D’Ivorie.
The Town’s academy manager Tim Bell was pleased with how the academy has improved and been shone to a different light.
“Ibby thoroughly deserves this for all his hard work and it’s a great opportunity for him to show what he can do on the international scene.
“The spotlight continues to be shined upon the Academy from international selectors.
“I want to recognise the staff for developing a programme that’s both challenge, and rewarding for our players and is helping them to achieve these call ups.”
