Cheltenham Town defender Lewis Shipley admits the players owe the fans a performance

A frustrating start of the season for Cheltenham Town and Michael Flynn has put the manager’s role in speculation with many of the fans wanting the Welshman out already. With only two wins from eight, Lewis Shipley knows Tuesdays’ fixture is a must win for the manager and fans:

“We need a performance, we owe everyone a performance after Saturday and I think we’re in today and ready to go.”

20-year-old Shipley is experiencing his second loan move in senior football this season with Cheltenham Town after joining the Gloucestershire Football Club on August 30th.

With Cheltenham and Accrington both having small crowds and small budget, Shipley was asked about the similarity of the clubs and his experience at Accrington last season:

He said: “I think every club has got its different things and clubs pretty much do things the same, I really enjoyed it there. First loan, played a lot of games and got on with everyone.”

After starting the last two games for The Robins, Shipley explained how he’s settled in to mens football and how he adapts to tough challenges:

“Obviously the main difference is the physicality, you’re going up against grown men who are 15 to 20 years older than you, so it’s just being able to adapt.

“They’ve been around, they’ve experienced, they know exactly what you don’t like as a defender so being able to adapt and deal with their physicality is the main factor.”

Accrington currently sit rock bottom of League Two on three points from seven games, still without a win.

Shipley said: “John likes playing out, I think they’ll be a well set up, well drilled team who are coming away from home to get a result.”

The Norwich City loanee opened up on his old sides poor start to the season:

“I thought it was a good group of lads, they’re a good side, I don’t think they’ll finish down there in my opinion but it means nothing to me now.

“I’m a Cheltenham player now, whatever’s put in front of me, I’m gonna go try beat.”
