Cheltenham Festival concludes today but the sporting excitement continues – Wade Elliott speaks ahead of Cheltenham Town v Exeter City

Off the back of a thrilling week of action at Cheltenham Festival, Cheltenham Town are back in action at home to 11th-placed Exeter City.

Buoyed by a 3-0 win over Peterborough last weekend, the hosts will be looking to continue their winning ways as we approach the business end of the season.

Wade Elliott spoke of the need to continue picking up points as his side look to avoid relegation back down to League Two, he said: “We know 40 points won’t be enough to keep us up, so we have to keep chipping away and keep moving forward and the next game is another chance to move another inch closer to where we need to get to.”

Wade is certainly aware of the threat posed by Exeter City, crediting their manager Gary Caldwell for managing to implement a style of play: “We know they’re good opposition, he’s (Gary Caldwell) started to implement his own style so they have changed.

“They retain that direct threat with Sam Nombe and Jay Stansfield. We know they’re a good side in good form. We’re expecting a difficult game.”

Having experienced mixed results against Exeter in recent years, the Robins will be hoping to emulate their most recent encounter in which they edged out a 1-0 win.

Wade and his players have been grateful to have a few days to recover following a busy period, he said: “We’ve come through a really thick block of games. The effort has been top draw.”

Finally, he revealed that some of his players attended Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday, saying: “We’ve given the players a day (Tuesday) to let them switch off a little bit, but the idea of that is to re-focus them on what’s coming at the weekend.”
