Santini came through in second, just ahead of Lostintranslation in third place.
The result made it four wins out of four today for trainer Willie Mullins.
The race was tight throughout, but Al Boum Photo, ridden by Paul Townsend made history.
Best Mate was the last horse to secure consecutive Gold Cup victories in 2004.
