Diver Tom Daley, boxer Tyson Fury, swimmer Adam Peaty, tennis player Emma Raducanu, footballer Raheem Sterling and cyclist Dame Sarah Storey have been named as the six nominees for the 2021 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Olympic diver Tom Daley finally won Olympic Gold in the synchronised 10m platform event with his diving partner Matty Lee in Tokyo.
Tyson Fury beat American Deontay Wilder again in one of the greatest Heavyweight Boxing bouts of all time. Fury was knocked down by the American twice before knocking him out in the 11th round.
Adam Peaty won Olympic 100m breaststroke gold again in Tokyo and in doing so became the first British swimmer to defend an Olympic title. He also was part of the mixed 4x100m medley relay victory and silver in the men’s medley relay line-up.
Emma Raducanu produced one of the greatest British sporting achievements after winning the US Open. The 19 year old was the first qualifier in the Open era to win a Grand Slam title and ended a 44 year wait for a British women’s Slam Champion.
Raheem Sterling scored three goals for England at Euro 2020 during their historic run to the final and was named in the team of the tournament. He also contributed to Manchester City’s Premier League and League Cup titles.
Paralympic cyclist Dame Sarah Storey won three golds in Tokyo to make her Great Britain’s most successful Paralympian of all time. She won the individual pursuit and time trial gold before winning C4-5 road race title to win her 17th gold and 28th Paralympic medal in total.
Emma Raducanu is the outright favourite to win the award with some bookmakers having her at odds as short as 1/20.
The showcase event will be shown on BBC One Sunday, 19th December live in Salford. As well as the main award the awards for Young Sports Personality of the Year, Team and Coach of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Unsung Hero will also be handed out.
